Allegations that a husband-and-wife cleaning team stole patient records from a Sarasota doctor to obtain fraudulent credit cards highlights a growing but often overlooked trend in identity theft.
Authorities say the duo from Ellenton, Michael Villa and Annia Calzadilla, stole names, Social Security numbers and birthdates from at least three patients, including a 52-year-old disabled Bradenton man.
The victims, authorities said, were patients of Dr. Steven Y. Chun, an anesthesiologist who rented space at HealthSouth Ridgelake Hospital in the 6100 block of Edgelake Drive in Sarasota.
Villa, 35, who had worked for HealthSouth, told detectives the documents were in a trash can in Chun's office. Authorities said they could not confirm the statement, and Chun declined comment. But an office manager said the documents could have been in a recycling bin bound for a shredder.
